Model Description

The smallest model of the KTM 4-stroke range is a great choice for motivated amateurs and ambitious pros alike, with its super compact, powerful engine, minimum weight and well-centered masses delivering a lively performance and fantastic handling. Shar - ing many components with the successful KTM 350 EXC-F engine, the 250cc 4-stroke powerplant offers class-leading performance and plenty of torque thanks to its advanced fuel injection system. The new KTM 250 EXC-F is even easier to ride, agile and highly controllable for complete rider confidence, with state-of-the-art technology for a great throttle response and power delivery.

ENGINE
The KTM 250 EXC-F DOHC engine is a highly compact and lightweight design. For MY2020, several updates help it deliver class-leading torque and power across the entire power band, reaching all the way up to 12,800 rpm. Its compact architecture contributes to the bike's excellent mass centralization and amazing rideability. And it only weighs 27.9 kg. That's including the practical E-starter.

ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The state-of-the-art Keihin engine management system with electronic fuel injection features a new 42 mm throttle body, providing a vivid response and maximum performance thanks to its unique injector position. This ensures excellent atomization of the fuel within the airflow toward the combustion chamber. In addition, there are separate systems for cold start and idle adjustment. In MY2020, a reworked throttle cable mount provides smoother routing of the cables and better access, while an improved seal for the MAP sensor (manifold air pressure) makes the system even more reliable. The ECU features updated mappings matched to the new exhaust, air filter box and engine configuration. At the same time, it controls the unique KTM enduro traction control, which is activated by an optional map select switch that also provides access to different maps with alternate power delivery characteristics. A gear position sensor even allows KTM to use different mappings individually optimized for each gear. 

E-STARTER
The KTM 250 EXC-F is fitted with a unique E-starter as standard, a clear advantage when it comes to crunch time in the heat of battle. A strong starter motor made by Mitsuba and the proven KTM starter drive ensure efficient and reliable starting at all times.

CYLINDER HEAD
The centerpiece of the compact DOHC engine is the ingenious cylinder head. Its two overhead camshafts activate the titanium valves (intake 32.5 mm, exhaust 26.5 mm) via super-light cam followers that have a hard-wearing, low friction DLC coating. For 2020, KTM engineers have optimized the cam shafts timings for even more performance, while the re-designed exhaust flange connects the header pipe even more securely.

CRANKSHAFT
The KTM 250 EXC-F engine has a rigid crankshaft and a connecting rod in a plain big end bearing, with two force-fitted bearing shells running directly on the crank pin. This design is a major prerequisite for the extremely high engine speed levels and the unrivaled power levels achieved by the 250cc engine. In combination with a reworked oil feed, MY2020 brings enhanced engine durability, with long crankshaft service intervals to save time, effort and costs.

TRANSMISSION
The forged gears of the new 6-speed transmission supplied by Pankl Racing Systems are made of a stronger new material, ensuring the highest durability and reliability. Perfectly matched to the power delivery of the 250cc 4-stroke single, the gear ratios remain unchanged for MY2020. All 4-stroke engines are fitted with a gear position sensor offering the option of different engine characteristics for each gear.

CLUTCH
The KTM-developed DDS clutch employs a diaphragm spring instead of the usual coil springs for an easy clutch action, while providing sufficient space for a damping system to be integrated directly into the clutch hub. The added benefit is increased traction, combined with outstanding clutch and transmission durability. Actuated by Brembo hydraulics, the clutch features consistently precise control across the entire operating temperature range.

CYLINDER & PISTON
The MY2020 engine features a new cylinder with a 78 mm bore carried over from the successful KTM 250 SX-F motocross engine, which, in conjunction with a new cylinder head gasket, raises the compression ratio from 12.8:1 to 13.8:1. The lightweight, forged bridged box-type piston made by CP features a unique piston crown shape perfectly matched to the combustion chamber that stands out with its extra rigid structure and low weight. Low oscillating masses make the engine extremely responsive.
